As I teach boys I found this film suitable for them, it may not be suitable for girls as there is a lot of shooting and blood in it. It can be rented from Extra-vision or probably any video rental and you can check it out for yourselves. If you like it, they will order a copy for you to buy.
I found it a good film to use as it is sub -titled and the language is relatively easy and the dialogue is slow and easy to follow.
Underneath I have suggested how you might use the film with a T.Y. class, it is only my suggestion and you can adapt it to your own classes. If you come up with other ideas I would be delighted to see them on the web-site.
As the film is based in Mexico it is a good idea to do some work on Mexico, there are lots of books which have information on Mexico e.g. ‘Ya 2’, also there is a very good feature in La Cometa ( enero 1999 Vol 4 Núm. 2. ) If you don’t have a copy of it back copies are available from Authentik tel. 353-1-6771512.
The showing of the film can take as long or as short as you like depending on what else you do with it. I usually show it over a 3 /4 week period starting with some work on Mexico which takes 3/ 4 classes. This is a good opportunity to talk about the connection between Spain and South America, ‘En España’ p.74 / 75 has information on it.
When this is done I usually start with the first exercise and then read exercise 2 the little introduction to the film which if its not finished I give for homework.
I usually show the film in segments of 15- 20 mins. The first part of the class is taken up by correcting homework which can consist of students learning the 2 vocabularies , 12 -15 words at a time and once the film has started filling in the blanks in exercise 3 for the part of the film shown that day.
Follow-up work can consist
of:
1. Rewriting exercise 3
in the past tense.
2. Discussion of the film
or cinema in general in Spanish.
3. Written work, either
writing their opinion of the film, a description of one or more characters,
or describing a trip to the cinema or a recent film they have seen.
4. As their are a lot of
imperatives used in the film this might be a good time either to do or
revise the imperatives. Small segments of the film could be watched again
to illustrate the grammar points.

El director de la película
‘ el Mariachi’ es Robert Rodriguez , es mexicano-americano, tiene 24 años
y vive en Austin, Texas. Escribió el guión de la película
en tres semanas, y sólo costó 7.000 dólares para rodarla,
sin embargo ha recibido catorce premios internacionales. El héroe
en un joven cantante que va vestido de negro y que lleva un estuche de
guitarra. Llega a un pequeño pueblo en México para buscar
trabajo.
Desafortunadamente para
él , el mismo día otro hombre que va vestido de negro que
lleva un estuche de guitarra ( pero este estuche está lleno de armas)llega
en el mismo pueblo. El segundo hombre acabó de salir de la prisión
, y tras una serie de equivocaciones y desastres el joven músico
cambia su guitarra por las armas.
Aunque es una película
filmada en español ha tenido mucho éxito por todas partes.
