Experiment 4.

To compare drainage in ‘’heavy’’ and ‘’light’’ soils.

Resources:
2 large graduated cylinders, water, 2 soil samples ( a clayey soil and a sandy soil) , 2 beakers, stopwatch.

Procedure:
1. Set up equipment as shown in the diagram below.
2. Put equal amounts of soil into cylinders ‘’A’’(sandy soil) and ‘’B’’(heavey soil).
3. Pour 100 ml of water into each (gradually).
4. Start the stop clock.
5. Fill the data into the table below.

Soil type Sandy soil Clayey soil
Time taken mins. mins.
Quantity drained cms. cms.

Which type of soil does the water drain more quickly through ?
Which soil has the greatest ability to retain water ?
What is an ‘’early soil’’ ? – Is this an advantage ?
What is leaching ? – Where is it most likely to occur and when ?
What type of soil would be prone to drought problems ?
